Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
