The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
