A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
