Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such drugs should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
